Kuksa carving tools, kit, set
What is kuksa and what is special about it?
The mug is used for drinking hot and cold drinks, as well as liquid food. Sizes range from small 50 ml to relatively large 500 ml used as tureens. In Finland, according to tradition, kuksa is given to a newborn, and the presence of such a mug means that a person does not break away from his roots. The Sami believe that kuksa brings good luck.
Due to its lightness, practicality and appearance, the kuksa has become popular among tourists, bushcrafters and survivalists. The mug can be purchased from numerous resources dedicated to this topic, as well as from artisans.
Kuksa is made both by hand and by an industrial method, using various woodworking equipment. Deciduous species of wood are used – oak, birch, ash, beech [4]. Traditionally, kuksa is manually cut from a spherical growth on a birch trunk – a suvel. The finished mugs are boiled in linseed oil to make them durable and water-resistant. The mug, for all its apparent massiveness, is very light and comfortable. Before the first use, strong coffee is poured into it for a few minutes, after which it is dried, and the inner surface is rubbed with coffee grounds to give the product a dark shiny tone.
In order not to spoil the mug, it is not recommended to wash it with detergents and use it for drinking alcohol, which dries wood.
